Welcome

It was almost two years ago when I first approached the Union County Historical  Society with the idea of  a web page. Having no experience in  web page  design, I  was putting myself out on a limb, but was willing to give it a try.  Finally, after much procrastination on my part, we have arrived to take our place in the world wide web.

I have learned much along the way, not only about creating web pages, but, more importantly, about the history of Union County.  Since becoming editor of our quarterly newsletter in December of 1998, I have developed somewhat of a passion for the unique history of  our county.

When looking back  at the grandiose visions  of these pioneers,  it's hard to believe anyone could dream so big and yet survive day to day in such simple surroundings.  There were  dreams of grand cities on the prairie, college campuses and business ventures sure to make young entrepreneurs rich and famous.  Unfortunately,  many of these dreams were altered by outside influences.  The railroads and mother nature played a hand in their fates, creating situations beyond their control.  But the dreams went on and changed with the times. Looking around our county this past month, as I photographed the historical sites,  I don't think these pioneers would be disappointed in what Union County has become.

While I hope you enjoy the photos and stories as you browse through our website, my underlying purpose is to further your appreciation of the history of Union County.  Hear the creak of the wagon wheels, feel the bitter cold of the 1888 blizzard and feel the frustration of the farmers  during the grasshopper plagues and the droughts... then thank your ancestors for their stamina, strength and visions  that make Union County the proud place we call our home.

Best Regards,
Joni Kjar
