Hyden
House

Listed
on the National Register of Historic Places, this Queen Anne style home was
built in 1909 by Dr. Andrew and Dr. Anna Hyden. This couple was a rare
combination of "horse and buggy" prairie physicians. The house
was designed to accomodate the doctors' joint medical practice. The house
is now a Bed and Breakfast. (Highway 11 in Alcester, SD, east on 2nd Street)

Alcester's
Herb Anderson Memorial Park

This park is the home of several
historical markers. The Civilian Conservation Corps Camp was established
in 1935 to employ young men during the depression. The men were
instrumental in building dams and terraces to prevent soil erosion. C.C.C.
activity ended May 7, 1942. The
second marker, a granite memorial, was
erected in the spring of 1989. It was sponsored by the VFW and the
community as a whole, commemorating those from the Alcester area who served in
the Armed Forces during any of the conflicts or wars. The third marker is a
dedication to Archie Gubbrud, governor of South Dakota from 1961-1965. The
marker was dedicated on September 4, 1976 in honor of his many achievements. (Highway
11 on the north edge of Alcester)
