Scheduled
Meetings
The Union County
Historical Society meets the third Monday of each month at 7:30
P.M. in the museum, located at 124 East Main Street, in Elk
Point, South Dakota.

The
Early Days
The Centennial
Historical Society of Union County was organized at the Spink Store,
Spink, South Dakota, on Monday evening, November 2, 1987. Joe
Cash, Professor of History of the University of South Dakota, was
present as advisor. He suggested "Centennial" as an
appropriate name, with the upcoming state centennial in 1989.
At
this first meeting, Vivian Abraham was appointed Chairman and Fern
Chicoine as Secretary. The board of directors included:
Glenadine Aamot, Cathleen Curry, Pastor Arthur Erickson, Marty
Erickson, Derald Keiser, Fay Kerr, Myrtle Twedt and Clarice
Yttreness.
By
the third meeting a motion was made by Derald Keiser that we be known
as the Union County Historical Society. The issue of Charter
Membership was addressed at the fourth meeting, with the decision that
those who joined by November 1, 1988 would be considered Charter
Members. The records show there were 74 Charter
Members.
